Tween sizing can be a bit of a minefield...they're growing, changing shape, and somehow managing to be between children's and adult sizes all at once. 😂
At Alt Originals, our tween clothing is handmade to order in a range of different styles and fits. A relaxed jumper, fitted skirt and pair of wide-leg trousers aren't going to fit the same way.
Age is only a guide. Two tweens of the same age can be completely different in height, proportions and build, so actual measurements are always the best place to start.
Before ordering, take a few minutes to check the measurements below. 💜
💜 How to measure
The easiest way to find the right size is to use a soft tape measure and take their measurements directly.
When measuring:
- Keep the tape measure snug but not tight.
- Don't pull the tape into the body.
- Measure over lightweight clothing or normal underwear.
- Keep the tape level where appropriate.
- Try to measure when they're standing naturally rather than sucking in, slouching or dramatically posing for the occasion. 😂
🖤 Please don't choose a size based purely on age.
Our age ranges are there to give you a starting point, but measurements are much more useful when choosing a handmade garment.
💜 Choosing between sizes
If their measurements sit comfortably within one size, that's usually the best place to start.
If they're between sizes, the right choice can depend on the garment, the fabric and the fit you're after. Some styles are close-fitting, while others are intentionally oversized or relaxed. Stretchy fabrics can also give you a little more flexibility than structured fabrics.

🖤 A note about tween sizing
This is the stage where things can change quickly. Height might shoot up while everything else seems to stay the same...or suddenly nothing fits quite how it did a few months ago. That's why our tween charts cover a range of different measurements and styles rather than assuming that one age automatically equals one size.
Always check the individual product listing for any style-specific sizing or fit information.
A pair of slim joggers won't fit like wide legs. A fitted dress won't fit like an oversized tee. And a stretchy fabric may behave very differently from a structured one. The pattern matters and the measurements matter most.
💜 What if they're between sizes?
Being between sizes is completely normal, especially at this age.
If their measurements fall between two sizes, think about:
- How you'd like the garment to fit
- Whether the style is fitted, relaxed or oversized
- How much growing room you'd like
- How stretchy the fabric is
- Which measurement is most important for that particular garment

Because every Alt Originals garment is handmade, we can sometimes accommodate small alterations such as a different length or measurement.
If you'd like something changed from the standard pattern, please contact us before ordering.
Some alterations may turn the garment into something bespoke or customised, so we'll chat through what's possible with you before we start making it.
